The National Item Identification Number, or NIIN, is the last nine digits of an NSN that serves to identify and classify standardized items. These codes are established and agreed upon by all NATO countries to ensure that there is order and organization to the many parts that enter the aerospace and defense markets for a variety of applications. NSN numbers are also used by some countries outside of NATO.
The first two digits of the NIIN represent the country that first coded the item as an important item of supply, or who manufactured it. This number ranges from “00” to “99” and includes the 29 NATO member countries such as the USA and United Kingdom, as well as the 34 NATO sponsered countries like Japan and Australia. The final 7 digits following the country identifier are a unique character string that serve as non-significant identification for the manufactured part. The nine digits of the NIIN are a part of the 13 total digits that comprise an NSN.
